Tesla’s in-house 4680 battery cells are underperforming as the company pursues battery independence. The automaker recently replaced supplier cells from LG Energy Solution and Panasonic with its own packs in certain European Model Y vehicles.

Real-world performance data shows these 4680-equipped vehicles suffer from reduced driving range and slower charging speeds. The rated driving range for these models dropped by 52 kilometers.

Lower energy density in the proprietary cells challenges Tesla’s goal of slashing costs through vertical integration. These setbacks highlight the manufacturing lead held by established battery manufacturers.
