Tesla has initiated engineering tests of production Cybercab vehicles on public roads in Austin, Texas. These vehicles operate entirely without a steering wheel or pedals. The Texas Department of Transportation officially confirmed this design feature. CEO Elon Musk shared video footage of the Cybercab navigating real-world streets autonomously.
This deployment occurs roughly 20 months after the Cybercab concept's October 2024 unveiling. The move leverages Tesla's existing autonomous driving operations in Austin. Retrofitted Model Y vehicles already provide active robotaxi services in the city.
The use of purpose-built hardware signals the program's advancement from prototype to commercial reality. This testing phase represents a significant milestone for Tesla's autonomous transport ambitions.
