Tesla has started engineering tests for its purpose-built Cybercab robotaxis on public roads in Austin, Texas. These vehicles feature no steering wheels or pedals, matching the production design revealed in October 2024.

A fleet of 34 vehicles currently operates autonomously during this testing phase. Each vehicle carries a human safety monitor for observation. This deployment upgrades Tesla’s existing Austin robotaxi service, which previously used retrofitted Model Y vehicles.

The Texas Department of Transportation officially confirmed the vehicle's controlless design. The state added the Cybercab to its first responder interaction list. These developments signal regulatory progress for Tesla's Level 4 autonomous system.
