Tesla has registered only 42 automated vehicles for its Robotaxi service with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Competitor Waymo currently maintains 577 authorized robotaxis in the state.
CNBC reported the figures following a new Texas law that took effect on May 28, 2026. The legislation requires commercial driverless operators to self-certify that vehicles meet Level 4 autonomy standards.
Tesla previously indicated to regulators that most of its fleet features Level 2 driver assistance. This data suggests Tesla is lagging behind competitors in the commercial rollout of autonomous vehicles in a primary market. No immediate market reaction was recorded.
