Viasat, collaborating with the BMW Group, demonstrated the first-ever satellite voice call. The call was fully integrated into a vehicle's native infotainment system.
The test occurred in a BMW iX3. It took place during the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) meeting. The meeting was held in Munich, Germany. This represents a key step in providing reliable connectivity for drivers in remote areas beyond traditional cellular networks.
The demonstration utilized Viasat's L-band satellite network. Qualcomm and CubicΒ³ provided enabling technology.
The system employs the standards-based Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) protocol. This ensures connectivity for crucial applications. These applications include emergency services, safety features, and over-the-air updates, regardless of vehicle location.
