Kioxia and Western Digital’s SanDisk unit will invest over $31 billion in Japan. The companies plan to complete this investment by 2032. This initiative aims to increase production of advanced memory chips.
The investment remains contingent on receiving support from the Japanese government. Surging demand for flash memory driven by the AI boom fuels the expansion. The companies will strengthen infrastructure at existing manufacturing sites in Yokkaichi and Kitakami.
The companies allocated approximately $11.3 billion (1.8 trillion yen) for a new fabrication facility at the Kitakami plant. This facility will produce advanced 3D flash memory for AI and data centers.
