Typhoon Saudel forced Shanghai and Ningbo ports to suspend operations after making landfall on China’s eastern coast. This closure marks the third time in three months these major hubs have halted work. Authorities expect the suspension to last through the weekend.
Global container port congestion reached a record high following these disruptions. Shipping analyst Linerlytica reports that 4.3 million TEU of capacity is currently stranded worldwide. This figure represents 12.6% of the entire global container fleet.
North Asia accounts for approximately half of the total stranded capacity. The concentration of idle ships near Chinese ports creates significant challenges for global logistics providers.
