Nikon CEO Yasuhiro Ohmura announced a strategy to challenge ASML by offering lower-priced photolithography equipment.

ASML currently controls over 80% of the semiconductor equipment market. Nikon plans to compete on price in the deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography segment, where both companies produce equipment for less advanced chips.

This strategy bypasses ASML's monopoly in high-end extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography. EUV technology remains essential for manufacturing the most advanced semiconductors.

Nikon will target cost-effective manufacturing for image sensors and power semiconductors. Ohmura, who took office in April 2026, stated this segment offers significant profit potential even at lower price points.
