Enbridge broke ground on the $4-billion Sunrise Expansion Program for the Westcoast natural gas pipeline system in British Columbia. The project received federal approval in April 2026. Company executives and government ministers attended the July 20, 2026, ceremony in Prince George.

The expansion adds 140 kilometers of new pipeline segments and increased compression. This infrastructure boosts transportation capacity by 300 million cubic feet per day. The additional volume will supply domestic demand and LNG export facilities like Woodfibre LNG.

The project will contribute over $3 billion to Canada’s GDP. Construction will create 2,500 jobs and generate significant tax revenue.

This initiative follows a 2025 agreement where 38 First Nations acquired a 12.5% stake in the existing pipeline system.
