Meta Platforms reached a settlement with the Breathitt County School District in Kentucky on Thursday. This agreement resolves the first federal bellwether trial regarding social media addiction.

The trial was originally scheduled to begin on June 15, 2026, in a California federal court. The lawsuit alleged that tech giants designed addictive features that fueled a youth mental health crisis. School districts claimed these features strained their educational resources.

Meta follows Alphabet’s YouTube, Snap, and TikTok in settling these specific claims. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The settlement removes a near-term legal overhang and cancels a high-profile trial.

Tech companies still face more than 1,200 similar lawsuits from other school districts. Shares of Meta and Snap posted modest gains following the announcement.
