Taiwan’s military conducted its first live-fire HIMARS drill on its western coast Wednesday.

The exercise in Taichung launched rockets into the Taiwan Strait to simulate invasion defense. This marks the first time the Lockheed Martin (LMT) system was tested facing mainland China. Previous tests were restricted to the island's eastern coast.

The deployment signals a strategic shift toward mobile, asymmetric warfare capabilities. These hard-to-target systems aim to deter larger adversaries.

HIMARS units are a key component of this strategy and have proven effective in Ukraine. The event strengthens Taiwan's defensive posture amid rising tensions with Beijing. High demand in the Indo-Pacific has increased Lockheed Martin's order backlog.
