AMG Critical Materials opened the first primary chrome metal production facility in the United States in decades. The Dutch company’s subsidiary, AMG Chrome, will operate the plant in New Castle, Pennsylvania.
This facility addresses a national supply chain vulnerability for metals essential to the aerospace, defense, and specialty steel industries. The plant begins operations with an initial capacity of 6,500 tons per year.
CEO Heinz Schimmelbusch highlighted the material's strategic role in SpaceX rockets and future nuclear fusion reactors. The investment re-establishes a domestic supply for a material that was previously almost entirely import-dependent.
Schimmelbusch intends to expand the New Castle site into a significant multi-metal center. This development reflects a broader trend of securing domestic supply chains for materials critical to national and economic security.
