Apple has introduced a new "Reference Image" feature with the launch of its iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The tool is designed to combat the rise of AI-generated deepfakes and misinformation by digitally authenticating photos at the moment of capture, providing a sort of "digital negative."
The feature works by creating a cryptographic signature for images taken with the new phones, verifying that they have not been subsequently altered. This allows users to compare edited images with the original, unalterable reference photo that shows what the camera's sensor originally saw. The system aims to provide a new layer of trust and authenticity for photojournalists, creators, and the public.
